It’s official.

We have adopted Fitzi.

The adoption contact is signed by all parties (while Fitzi didn’t sign we judge from the photo that he’s OK with the arrangement).

A deep and heartfelt ‘thank you’ to NOLA Lab Rescue to let us foster and then to adopt him. I’m very moved by their trust and faith in us. He’s the right dog at the right time.

Welcome home sir.

Gotcha

Gotcha is a word that resonates in the dog rescue world. It denotes adopting a dog, often the date that a dog is adopted as in ‘gotcha day’.

I brought Stella home about 13 years ago. I say about because I can’t remember whether it was today or tomorrow. The specific date does not matter to me. Other things related to bringing her home matter far, far more.

One thing is that her previous owners readily gave her up, entrusting her to my care. Another is that despite (perhaps because of) the seriously challenging trials we went through I refused to give up on her. Or give up on myself. Which leads me to a third thing.

Stella was the right dog at the right time. She was and still is a spirit dog.

Gotcha Stella. Then, today, forever.

Noble

Amid the detritus revealed by melting snow, noble Achilles enjoys a recent mild afternoon.

Relaxes

When Achilles sleeps, even his tongue relaxes.

Spirit dog

The author Jon Katz writes about the Spirit Dog, a dog that comes into your life when you need it.

Stella was and is a Spirit Dog. She was entrusted to me by people who must have found it difficult to let go of her, yet did let go. Stella and I worked through some challenges, I found purpose and gumption in guiding, training her. We did a lot of work and learned a great deal. We’ve been on quite a journey, which hasn’t ended.

Favourite place

Stella in her favourite place, the dog bed in front of the wall furnace which periodically emits a welcome blast of heat.

Questing

As the shutter clicked, capturing this image of our current foster Fitzi, a scent on the wind sent him questing, trying to catch a better whiff.

Cautiously

Stella cautiously looks over the edge of the deck of a treehouse we recently stayed at.

Achilles’ post-dental work report

Achilles had his two week check-up the other day, after several dental extractions on October 7. The vet is very pleased with his recovery and said that the extrachtions have healed quite well. He gave the go-ahead to slowly resume feeding kibble beginning today, two weeks post-surgery. Lamentably, more teeth need to be extracted. They can wait though; there is no hurry.

For now, we give thanks for the good boy’s fine recovery.
