Testing

Primary feathers splayed and testing the gusty wind, a turkey vulture gracefully sails the wind-sea.

Soaring

These Turkey vultures recently soared above our home, taking advantage of a stiff, gusty west wind. They are graceful, graceful birds.

Soaring

We often see turkey vultures soar over our home. When viewed up close they are homely creatures. When seen like this, they are graceful, beautiful. Faye calls them her buddies.

Wheeling and soaring

Wheeling and soaring

Twenty-five turkey vultures riding the wind. A beautiful sight.

Sailing

No, not on the water, through another fluid. Turkey Vultures are so graceful, riding the waves and eddies, primary feathers outstretched. Watching them soar is always entertaining. Less entertaining for Kendal, who barks ferociously at every one he sees.

Soaring

Soaring

This Red-tailed Hawk rode the wind yesterday, graceful, silent, a pleasure to admire. It was lunchtime at work yet it was right to dash outside and photograph it, then lower the camera and watch with a smile on my face and in my heart as it continued to soar.

Make time to reflect on and give thanks for being alive, being in the world.

Harbinger of spring

Harbinger of spring

The first Turkey Vulture of 2014 I photographed over Dresden. Not easy for you to see I know. They may be ugly up close but aloft they are graceful, a real pleasure to watch wheeling overhead.

A true sign of the turn of the seasons. The only snow that remains is the big snowbanks and what’s in protected shady areas.

Achilles and Kendal

Achilles and Kendal

Such different temperaments, different personalities. Achilles is (adn I’m anthropomorphizing) deferential, gentle, graceful. Kendal by contrast is bluff, assertive, physical, clumsy. Both are deeply valued, deeply loved companions.

Elk

Elk

In June 2010 I had occasion to visit Estes Park CO with family. We stayed in a rental house in town. I learned that it wasn’t unheard of for elk to saunter through town. One day this elk wandered into the rental’s yard. After saying a few choice phrases I grabbed my camera and began snapping away. This beautiful animal was perhaps 50 feet away from me, I was astounded to see how this powerful, graceful, regal animal stood still for a minute or so, almost consciously posing while I photographed it. I was also quite cognizant that something could disturb it, sending it running in any direction including mine. Never saw one before and may never see one again. It was an almost magical experience and one I vividly remember.
