Visitor

ETA: Now the photo is posted.

I rummaged through photos and came across this one from July. I put out suet cakes for a week or two and this female Downy Woodpecker (link goes to allaboutbirds.org) regularly visited. She also visited the hummingbird feeder, right background, and I think was able to extract some nectar.

I resumed filling the seed feeders late last week and expect to see more visitors soon.

Soaring

These Turkey vultures recently soared above our home, taking advantage of a stiff, gusty west wind. They are graceful, graceful birds.

Soaring

We often see turkey vultures soar over our home. When viewed up close they are homely creatures. When seen like this, they are graceful, beautiful. Faye calls them her buddies.

Hiding

This Killdeer chick hides in plain sight by being completely motionless, while the nearby adult tries to distract me by crying, running, drawing me away from this little piece of fluff on stilts.

Shy

Tundra Swans, Cygnus columbianus (link to allaboutbirds.org), are majestic, breathtakingly marvellous birds to watch. As they migrate through our part of the world on their way to their breeding ground, many stop and rest in harvested corn fields. When resting they congregate in large flocks that sometimes number in the hundreds or thousands.

They are also wary of humans, flying away when we become too intrusive. I was fortunate to approach within about 100 meters. After taking this photo I withdrew to leave them in peace.
