Protecting.

I climbed 58 steps to the top of an outdoor platform for exercise, and to take a look around this very flat part of the world. After a moment or two this Merlin began diving on me, likely protecting a nearby nest. A moment of searching did not turn it up, and since my presence was an unnecessary (and obviously unwelcome) distraction, I decided to stop looking and take my leave.

It was interesting to learn, among other things, that they take over other birds’ nests.

Captured.

Eagles

When the boss returned from running errands he said two Bald Eagles were in the field just up the road and asked if I had my camera. Well yes so I drove up the road and there they were, about 100 meters from where i stopped. The brisk and gusty breeze made it a challenge to hold the camera still enough to capture a not bad image.

Closer

Here is a closer view of one of the Broad-winged Hawks I saw Saturday evening. You can see the distinctive white stripe across the tail as well as the black border on the wings.

I don’t remember ever seeing one before and had get out my hard copy of The Sibley Guide to Birds to identify it. Then I went to its entry at allaboutbirds.org to learn more.
