Revisiting

Revisiting old photos.

Hi Stella.

Adieu

We bid adieu to February by trying to create a family portrait on a blustery day. We were less than 100 percent successful.

Back on Thursday. And again, thank you for visiting.

Profile

A profile photo of Stella. Senior dog, forever dog.

Suits

Senior Stella curled up on the end of the couch that gets the most direct blast of heat from the wall furnace. Approaching 14 years old, this end of the couch suits her when she’s not on the dog bed directly in front of the furnace.

Gotcha

Gotcha is a word that resonates in the dog rescue world. It denotes adopting a dog. Often the date that a dog is adopted is ‘gotcha day’.

I brought Stella home about 13 years ago. I say about because I can’t remember whether it was today or tomorrow. The specific date does not matter to me. Other things related to bringing her home matter far, far more.

One thing is that her previous owners readily gave her up, entrusting her to my care. Another is that despite (perhaps because of) the seriously challenging trials we went through I refused to give up on her. Or give up on myself. Which leads me to a third thing.

Stella was the right dog at the right time. She was and still is a spirit dog.

Gotcha Stella. Then, today, forever.

Snug Stella

On a snowy day senior Stella is still ready to take a walk. Here, she relaxes in front of the furnace.

Spirit dog

The author Jon Katz writes about the Spirit Dog, a dog that comes into your life when you need it.

Stella was and is a Spirit Dog. She was entrusted to me by people who must have found it difficult to let go of her, yet did let go. Stella and I worked through some challenges, I found purpose and gumption in guiding, training her. We did a lot of work and learned a great deal. We’ve been on quite a journey, which hasn’t ended.

Favourite place
