A willow and (if I recall correctly) a cottonwood. Distant cousins, granted, related nonetheless.
Soft
The soft curves of trees, clouds, and the almost imperceptible curvature of the land are restful to the eye.
Harbinger
I almost overlooked this maple leaf. It was lodged in sand at the edge of the stepping stones, a place I walk several times daily. I’m normally looking up, around, yet I looked down and saw this.
A harbinger that Fall is coming. That’s fine, even good. Life, the seasons, are a circle, a wheel, around which we travel. I look forward to whatever delights and mysteries this fall brings.
Barn, Lambton County
I pass this barn several times a week. It’s the same barn, in the same place, yet the light is different every day. It’s a work of art.
Old wood sided barns like this one are disappearing. They are ‘inefficient’, ‘expensive’ (now) to maintain, they are diversions to farmers looking to maximize yield and minimize hassle. I suspect that when this barn becomes too much trouble as it is, it will be knocked down. Sad.
A good day for a walk
Achilles and I walked in the Ontario Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) Friends for Life! Walk today. I adopted Achilles from a central Texas animal shelter in 2006, and I wanted to pay back/pay forward the favour the shelter did to him, to me, for keeping him until I came along. More than a few people very generously donated money to sponsor our walk to raise money for the OSPCA.
It was a Goldilocks morning for a walk, not cool or warm, not rainy, some sun, some clouds, a good breeze. We had a good 2 1/2 klick walk. Several times we stopped – no rush, no need to hurry. I got the camera out a few times, and one time the stars aligned for this informal portrait.
It was a good day for a walk and it has been a good day to give thanks.
