Naturalized.

Our municipality’s Council recently approved a bylaw amendment to allow naturalized areas in residential areas.

Don’t tell anyone (shhhh), we have had naturalized areas in our yard for years now. This bed in our front yard is full of Purple Coneflower (background), Tickseed (foreground), and Gaillardia (out of the frame). While I can broaden my knowledge of insects in general and pollinators in particular, I am certain our yard is friendlier to pollinators than that of almost all of our neighbours who have (mostly) turfgrass and imported ornamentals.

We also let dandelions go, probably to our neighbours’ chagrin.

Gaillardia.

Cheerful

Indian blanket (Gaillairdia pulchella) is such a cheerful flower and always brings a smile.

Splash of colour

I have come down with a cold. It’s more an annoyance than anything else, but is dragging me down a bit.

As an antidote here is a reminder that mild days are ahead, and wanted to share my reminder with you. Our gaillardia in joyous bloom.

Cheerful

I rarely fail to smile when looking at our gaillardia. Cheerful, bright bursts of sunshine at ground level. Sometimes I get down to their level to better appreciate their beauty.

Industry

Our gaillardia were pleasingly happy this year, as this industrious (and in non-stop motion) honeybee attests.

Splash of colour

These gaillardia grace our property. Although the minimalist shades and colours of winter have their own beauty, sometimes it’s good to add a splash of colour to your life.
