On the move

Migratory birds are on the move here. Robins are no linger tut-tutting, killdeer are scarce, have not seen or heard orioles and grosbeaks for a while.

On a recent grey and gloomy day, during an outing that took me to the north shore of Lake Erie, I saw this group of Turkey vultures on the move, headed west along the lake shore to the nearest way around the lake instead of over it. Such graceful birds.

Roll, then shake

A roll in the grass feels good no matter your age.

As does a vigorous shake when you’re done.

Colour

Though evenings’ light is almost gone, a Purple coneflower still graces with a dash of colour.

Glows

As twilight comes on, a stand of Black-eyed Susans softly glows in a protected part of our back yard.

Daybreak

Daybreak signals the end of another night – a rest period for most, the end of the ‘day’ for many, including agricultural workers. Faye is one of the many. During the current tomato harvest processing season she gets home about 4:15AM and is asleep before daybreak.

Move on

This morning I began picking up the laundry basket and abruptly stopped –  this transient praying mantis was resting. I admired it for a moment, then encouraged it to move on so I, too, could move on.
