Fasted

I fasted Wednesday evening.

We enjoyed a dinner of baked chicken thighs with Cajun beans and rice.

My fast was staying off the internet and the computer. There was no compelling need, little desire, to check email, facebook, chat, news and commentary, weather. So after dinner I stayed on the couch with Faye (and Fitzi). We talked and later I read a couple chapters of Fate is the Hunter, a book rich with meaning. Before going to bed I gave thanks for my many real blessings. It was a very good evening.

It’s good to step away from the realm of bits, bytes, online friends, instant searches; and  live in the real world of my sweetie and my dogs, a real book, a warm house.

So don’t be distressed if there is no post next Wednesday, or the one after that, or . . .

Burst

The sun bursts above the horizon, illuminating a new day. Glorious scenes like this reinforce my gladness for being alive, being able to live, witness and share.

Greeting

This marvellous sight greeted me the other morning. I paused for a moment to appreciate, and give thanks, for being blessed with beauty and life.

Dawn, thankful

Grateful for blessings such as this dawn scene, I’m glad to be alive. I will let others be angry, fearful, divisive.

Splash

I do my best to appreciate what is in my life now, today, this season, no matter what time of year or what is happening. That’s what much of my photography is about –  stopping and looking, trying to see, giving thanks for what I see, and sharing a small portion of the beauty that I live in.

Sometimes though it’s good, uplifting, reinforcing, to look at something from a different time, to put current life in a different perspective. To look forward, to anticipate. I look forward to seeing this splash of colour again in a few months.

Cold

As is much of eastern Canada and the US, it’s very cold here. The porch thermometer reads -20C. Going outside for more than a few minutes means the cold bites fingers, toes, nose, ears. The dogs, even outdoorsman Achilles, spend very little time out. The furnace is doing yeoman work keeping the living room not-cold. I once thought of traveling to Churchill or Yellowknife during a winter, to experience true cold. That’s no longer necessary.

Yet we are blessed. We do have a working furnace, food in the cupboard, our pipes are not frozen, we have reliable electricity. I do appreciate all of these blessings and the many more we have.

Sun

This morning, I decided to take a photo of our neighbour the pine tree reaching out for the clear sky shortly before sunrise. If the weather forecast holds true we will see little of the sky for the next few days. The sky will be grey instead, and we may get a lot of rain. Our Christmas is unlikely to be white. That’s fine, I don’t need snow to appreciate a special day.

Thankful

Today has been my birthday. In some ways it was unremarkable. Faye and I shopped; we walked the dogs; visited a friend’ checked many movies out of the library; had dinner out.

In other ways it’s been a remarkable day. I am healthy; happy; have work I enjoy doing; have three great dogs; and the most marvellous wife, companion, best friend, partner.

I’m very thankful.

A riot

Breathtaking colour and form awaited me this crisp, glorious morning. I am so thankful to see such beauty, and to be able to share it with you.
