Roiled the sky.

Yesterday’s approaching thunderstorm roiled the sky.

Wind-up toy.

I tend to think ‘wind-up toy’ when I watch a woodpecker move. Tick-a, tick-a, tick-a.

A Downy Woodpecker. It’s interesting that this individual does not share – it jabs at any other bird on the feeder and continues jabbing until the other bird leaves.

Adjust.

I relocated the feeder mentioned in the previous post in an effort to make it more difficult for squirrels to get at. This Blue Jay adjusted to the new setup in no time at all.

songbird

A House Finch visits the hopper feeder; both are highlighted by the evening sun.

A pleasant surprise.

Seeing this rainbow was a pleasant surprise.

A molting American Goldfinch and a fledgling perch on a sunflower just outside the kitchen window. I deduced it as a fledgling because it exhibited begging behaviour just before taking this photo, which may appear to be a little out of focus – I shot it through the window screen.

It’s Lucy’s turn.

Sometimes words are superfluous.

Soft colours.

Although I miss the very early sunrises of high summer, the lovely soft colours of September mornings before sunrise are marvellous.

Critter.

This critter is a freshly hatched Snapping Turtle. A nest was dug and eggs were laid this spring at my workplace. It was protected from marauding opportunists until yesterday, when it was opened and hatchlings were discovered. They faced a tough journey to the nearest water – either down a steep 6-7 meter slope, or a gentler but longer 25 meter trip through tall grass and weeds.

We carried several down to the water and released them. It was the least we could do.

No apologies for the out of focus shot. I was more attentive to expeditiously getting it down to the water than on taking a well composed photograph.
